EPFL is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 16,000 people, including over 12,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

Within the faculty of engineering (STI), the Galatea Laboratory explores novel paradigms to tailor material properties locally using lasers. Our research involves three main clusters: understanding and exploring laser- matter interaction phenomena, investigating new manufacturing processes based on 3D direct-write laser methods, and finally, exploring novel concepts of multi-scale systems based on single monolith. The lab features state-of-the- art laser facilities and infrastructure for pioneer research.

The Galatea Lab is located in the vibrant Neuchâtel's campus of EPFL, part of Microcity, a unique ecosystem focused on micro-technologies and advanced micro-manufacturing.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in advanced optical integration

Your mission :

For a project in collaboration with Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM), we are looking for a post-doc to investigate new concepts of femtosecond laser-based methods to achieve the next level of optical integration in precision optical benches. The work will involve advanced freeform optomechanical design principles and innovative laser-based concepts to achieve ultrahigh beam positioning accuracy and long-term dimensional stability suitable for precision optical instrumentation and devices like interferometers, photonic integrated circuits, atomic clocks and other quantum optical devices.

Main duties and responsibilities include :

  • Define relevant research and experimental plans, sustained with theoretical considerations and knowledge of the literature.
  • Conduct experiments and analyze data.
  • Report and disseminate the research outcome in journal publications and in conferences.
  • Interact and collaborate with other lab members as well as with our partners at CSEM and abroad.
  • Occasionally supervise undergraduate students.
  • Contribute to the lab life.
  • Your profile :

  • You recently obtained a PhD in physics, microengineering or related fields with a strong knowledge of optics.
  • You have experience in optical and mechanical design and related simulation tools.
  • You have hands-on experience with optical setups, and in particular, setups involving lasers and dimensional metrology.
  • Being independent, creative, solution-oriented, open-minded, flexible and team-player, you have an interest for a long-term research career.
  • We offer :

  • Opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge emerging topic.
  • Opportunity to work in an established multidisciplinary lab in ultrafast laser-matter interaction and advanced manufacturing processes, as well as optomechanical designs.
  • Opportunity to access state-of-the-art research facilities and laboratory resources.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with world-leading research groups through international consortiums.
  • Opportunity to interact with multidisciplinary projects with strong links to industry and spin-offs.
  • EPFL is an international and top-ranking engineering university. It offers a young, stimulating, dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international working environment, a broad range of scientific training and networking events and hosts a vibrant entrepreneurial community.
  • EPFL is an equal-opportunity employer. Candidates will be recruited based on merit.
  • Start date : As soon as possible

Term of employment : Fixed-term (CDD)

    Work rate : 100%

Duration : Fixed-term (CDD) up to 4 years, renewable on a one-year basis

    Contact :

Please send your application through the HR recruitment site. It shall include a cover letter, CV, a list of publications, and contact details of three referees. Applications will be evaluated as soon as received. Contact Information (Prof. Yves Bellouard): [email protected]

Remark : Only candidates who applied through EPFL website or our partner Jobup's website will be considered. Files sent by agencies without a mandate will not be taken into account.
