Postdoctoral Research Associate

Department of Experimental Psychology, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road

We invite applications for a post-doctoral research associate to study the neuroscience of working memory. Working memory is our ability to hold information for short periods, for example keeping a card number in mind before typing it. However, the cognitive and neural mechanisms of this remain a major unsolved mystery. It has been proposed that the brain states that hold some of the information in mind are “silent” – i.e. cannot be read out from overt brain activity. However they may affect the processing of subsequent information. This project will study these latent states in working memory using behaviour and EEG/MEG recordings.

The post is full-time for a fixed-term of 9 months. The post is available to start immediately or within the next 2 months.

The main duties include coding up tasks, running an EEG and/or MEG study, and leading the analysis. Training and support is provided in MEG at the Oxford Centre for Human Brain Activity (OHBA). As part of this project, you will join a wide network of collaborators across different University departments, including in computational neuroscience and experimental psychology.

You should have completed, or be nearing completion of, a PhD in a related discipline, with experience in designing, coding and running behavioural or imaging studies. Good communication skills and a publication record are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively as part of a research team.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Sanjay Manohar.

The closing date for applications is midday on 17th March 2023. Interviews will be held during the week beginning 27th March.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a supporting statement explaining how you meet the criteria for this role, a CV and details of two referees.
