Postdoctoral Research Associate

Job description

Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

The above 3-year (University-funded) fixed term, full-time post is available immediately in the Faculty.

The post

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Exeter wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the research of Prof. Tim Harries.

The successful applicant will analyse and model high-resolution observations of protoplanetary discs obtained using the Gemini Planet Imager instrument. They will use the Exeter-led Monte Carlo radiative code TORUS (extending it where necessary) to model these observations in order to investigate the mechanisms that produce large-scale structures in the discs. They will use archive data and write follow-up observing proposals in order to construct multi-wavelength datasets in order to better constrain the disc structure and dynamics.

The successful applicant will have experience in observational and numerical modelling studies of protostellar discs and possess sufficient specialist knowledge to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants should be able to analyse complex high-resolution datasets of disc imaging, run supercomputer simulations to produce numerical models, and develop follow-up proposals for time on ground- and space-based facilities.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role by clicking on the attachment.
