Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in extreme events and their impacts in a changing climate
We seek to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join the prolific climate and impact science community at the University of Oxford, and that is interested in playing a crucial part in the multifaceted outcomes of this project. You will be a member of Climate Research Programme, but there is opportunity to engage Oxford researchers with common research interests at other Department and Schools.
Your duties will include data analysis, postprocessing and attribution of the selected classes of societally impactful hydrological extreme events and TCs recently observed and projected by the end of 21st century. You will also work on incorporating climate information of such extreme events into the climate risk stress testing tool and resilience rating system at the World Bank and dissemination to its stakeholders around the world through CCKP. Developing new ideas for addressing physical and socio-economic research questions on extreme events in a changing climate will be encouraged and supported is a key responsibility.
The post holder will have a doctorate (or have recently submitted) in a relevant subject. The PDRA will need to be proactive, working both independently and as part of a climate-economy project team spanning two continents, whilst managing and prioritising elements of an ambitious list of exciting and impactful objectives. This multidisciplinary post offers the opportunity to advance research career in the area of extreme events and climate change as well as to opening a spectrum of options outside of academia. If the PDRA is interested they will be in position to provide guidance to junior members of ECI and/or SoGE students (i.e., the PDRA may also have opportunities to co-supervise Masters projects).
The PDRA will have very good programming/scripting skills (e.g., in Python, and/or R, and/or Matlab, and/or Bash script & NCO & CDO, etc.), and demonstrable expertise in the analysis of big data (most importantly, meteorological and climate products) and the interpretation of climate observations and model simulations. Additionally, an experience with the analysis of the impacts of extreme events on the economy and biosphere would be of value. Applicants with a range of academic subject backgrounds are welcomed, including natural sciences, engineering, statistics or applied mathematics with experience or growing interest in atmospheric physics, meteorology and climate.

This is a fixed-term full-time post 12 months, with possibility of extension. The start date is 1 April, 2023 (with possibility of +/- one-month adjustment).
