  • As a member of our laboratory, the postdoctoral research associate will be a member of the "Organometallics: Materials and Catalysis" research team. The proposed project fits within the theme of organometallic synthesis for sustainable development. The PDRA will work under the direction of Dr. Yann Sarazin, and will aim to synthesise and characterise heterobimetallic complexes built on metals of blocks 1 and 2, and to study their reactivity towards targeted organic substrates.

    The multidisciplinary project revolves around the synthetic organometallic chemistry of alkaline-earth (Ca, Sr and Ba) and alkali (Li, Na and K) metals, and around their implementation in aromatic deprotometallations, with a view to producing new synthetic tools to access different families of fine organic chemicals. Amido, hydrocarbyl and/or alkoxo heterobimetallic alkali/alkaline-earth complexes will be synthesised. Once characterised in depth, they will be used to functionalise organic substrates for which limitations are known with current state-of-the-art methods, in terms of reactivity (e.g. phenol and aniline derivatives), regioselectivity (aniline derivatives, chroman) and enantioselectivity (ferrocenol and ferrocenamine derivatives, phthalan). For these reactions, the bimetallic molecular alkali/alkaline-earth complexes and the arylmetals subsequently generated under reaction conditions will be identified and fully characterised, while plausible mechanistic pathways will be delineated. High resolution analytical methods (NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry) will be applied in link with state-of-the-art DFT computations to achieve both of these goals. Moreover, the generated arylmetal species will be derivatised by interception with a range of electrophiles in order to turn this method into a valuable tool for organic synthesis.

    Collaborations with our partners in Rennes (for DFT and reactivity studies) and in Rouen (for high resolution NMR spectroscopy) will be essential to the projects, and the ability to interact with these teams will be required. Secondments in Rouen for hands-on practice of high resolution NMR and mass spectrometry analytical methods are to be anticipated.

    The PDRA will have to take charge of writing scientific reports on the progress of the work and that of publications on the major results. (S)he will have to regularly present the results during oral presentations. (S)He will also be involved in the scientific life of our research group, in particular through the supervision of master students.

    ISCR is classified as a Restricted Regime Zone (ZRR) with controlled access to the premises.

    The position, opened for an initial 18 months, may be extended to 24 months if required.

    The postdoc will be expected to start on 2022, November, 14, or as soon as possible after this date.

    The candidate must already have expertise and a strong interest in organometallic synthesis, and must hold a doctorate in organometallic chemistry. (S)He must have skills in the synthesis and the handling of reactive metal-based compounds under an inert atmosphere and in structural analysis (spectroscopies including NMR; XRD; chromatography; mass spectrometry) of small molecules.

    The proposed activity requires a good level of English, to work in a multicultural team and for the dissemination of science: writing of scientific reports, articles, presentations in English. The PDRA will be expected to produce reports and manuscripts for publication. The candidate must have a team spirit and must be able to work in the laboratory in complete autonomy. (S)He will be involved in the supervision of junior researchers (starting PhD students and Master students).

    Gross salary between 2,663 and 3,783 € pcm, depending on experience
