Description

Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Mathematical Modelling of the Impact of Hypoxia Dynamics on Therapeutic Responses in Breast Cancer

Mathematical Institute, Andrew Wiles Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Professor Helen Byrne on an exciting new Cancer Research UK funded project, using mathematical and computational modelling to understand the impact of hypoxia dynamics on therapeutic responses in breast cancer. The position is available for 20 months and the post-holder will be based at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford.

The successful applicant will join a successful multi-disciplinary team of researchers at the Mathematical Institute and Department of Oncology, University of Oxford, and the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, with the ultimate aim of investigating how cycling hypoxia, or low oxygen levels, affects the growth and response of tumours to treatment. They will use mathematical and computational modelling techniques via the group's existing programming software, Microvessel Chaste, to simulate blood flow initially through artificial vessel networks, and later through biological vessel networks derived from photoacoustic images.

Applicants will be expected to have, or be close to completing, a PhD in mathematics or a related discipline. You must have prior experience of developing and applying numerical methods to solve systems of partial differential equations (PDEs), and an ability to program in C++ or a similar language. Previous experience of the multiscale modelling of biological systems and image analysis is desirable.

We proudly hold a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award and an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our strategic aim to improve staff equality and diversity, we would particularly welcome applications from women and BAME candidates, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type within the department.

Please direct informal enquiries to the Recruitment Coordinator at the email address given below, quoting vacancy reference 160165.

Applicants will be selected for interview purely based on their ability to satisfy the selection criteria as outlined in full in the job description. You will be required to upload a statement setting out how you meet the selection criteria, a curriculum vitae including full list of publications, a statement of research interests, and the contact details of two referees as part of your online application. (NOTE: Applicants are responsible for contacting their referees and making sure that their letters are received by the closing date).

Only applications received before 12.00 noon on Monday 3rd October 2022 can be considered.
