Postdoctoral Research Associate in Structure-informed studies of the extracellular region of the human notch receptor in health & disease

Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford Grade 7: £33,309 - £40,927 p.a.

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Prof Penny Handford's group working on Notch signalling in health and disease. The project aims to investigate structure/function relationships in Notch extracellular domains and determine how intra- and inter-molecular interactions may regulate receptor activity. You will use a combination of molecular and cell-based assays to probe the effects of structure-informed mutations on Notch activation.

Applicants should possess, or expect to obtain soon, a PhD in Biochemistry, Cell Biology or a related area, with experience of working in the area of molecular and cellular characterisation of mammalian cell surface/extracellular proteins. You will be familiar with mammalian cell culture and creation of stable and/or CRISPR/Cas9-edited cell lines, FACS, as well as recombinant protein expression (prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems) and chromatography methods and have applied these methods in your research. Knowledge of biophysical and biochemical analytical techniques such as SPR, mass spectrometry, NMR, and/or ELISA-type plate assays would also be of benefit to the project. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, as you will need to keep detailed laboratory records to meet publication standards, as well as give verbal updates on research progress. You will be required to demonstrate considerable self-motivation, independence, competence and success in your thesis and/or postdoctoral work, and have the ability to work collaboratively and supportively in a laboratory environment, as well as contributing to supervision activities.

This full time fixed term post is funded by the MRC for up to 3 years in the first instance and is based at the Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QU.

This position is graded on the University's Grade 7 scale. The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.
