Cloud-based computing provide novel ways in which stakeholders (academics, industrial partners, policy-makers) can interact to solve fundamental, basic and applied problems facing the humanity in the 21st Century. Based around marine ecological problems, the aim of this project is to build a library of resources into a test-bed that can be used to address scientific problems. The scientific goals of the marine ecology project are to develop an understanding of the reef fish diversity for the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). Working with collaborators, this approach will build metrics around how reef fish contribute to the ecological function and evolutionary diversity in the WIO. Further, with these metrics the aim is to understand the impact of fishing pressure on reef fish biodiversity and assess how levels of poverty and socioeconomic activity affect marine biodiversity under changing environmental conditions.

Main responsibilities and duties: the PDRA will with have responsibility for carrying out the goals of this research project in the development and applications of machine learning approaches to marine ecology.

Skills and experience: the PDRA will have relevant experience in machine learning approaches and the application of these methods to large datasets.

Qualifications:

• Candidates are expected to hold a relevant PhD, together with relevant experience in the machine learning and working with large datasets.

• Candidates are expected to have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
