Postdoctoral Research Assistant in TOMoscopy
We are seeking a full-time Post-Doctoral Research Assistant to join the
Korsunsky MBLEM research group at the Department of Engineering Science
(central Oxford). The post funded by Innovate UK (EC Pathfinder) grant is
fixed term to 31st October 2024.
The research project will unlock the potential of X-ray free electron laser
(XFEL) beams for ultrafast time-resolved 3D imaging of stochastic, non-
repeatable processes such as moving boundary phenomena in the liquid-gas,
liquid-solid and solid-solid systems, including two-phase flows, phase
transformations, and rapid deformation phenomena.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing computational fluid
dynamics (CFD) support for experiments involving laminar to turbulent
transition flows, bubble formation and collapse during cavitation and
ultrasonic peening, and interpreting simulation results using data-driven
algorithms such as dynamic mode decomposition. The PDRA will also be involved
in preparing and optimizing bespoke experimental configurations in Oxford labs
(in collaboration with Prof. Hitoshi Soyama, Tohoku Univ.), participating in
beamtime sessions at XFEL (Hamburg) working closely with the local team of
Patrick Vagovic and colleagues on beamline SPB/SFX, and processing X-ray
imaging data (in collaboration with Prof. Pablo Villanueva Perez, Lund
Univ.). An important aspect of the work will involve preparing and delivering
presentations and taking the lead in preparing the results for publication.
Applicants should possess a doctoral degree (DPhil/ PhD) (or be near
completion past submission) in the field of CFD and/or X-ray science
(imaging and diffraction) and have relevant experience and strong background
in the area of numerical methods and/or imaging and scattering using partially
coherent x-ray beams. You will have the ability to perform innovative and
