Description

EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,000 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 16,000 people, including over 12,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

Postdoctoral position on “integrating multidisciplinary data at high-

frequency to assess the impacts of global changes in a large European lake”

Your mission : The Limnology Center (https:// limnc.epfl.ch) aims at fostering national and international interdisciplinary collaborations in aquatic science. The Center manages the LéXPLORE platform (www. lexplore.info) in collaboration with the other four academic partners. This novel platform, installed on Lake Geneva since February 2019, acquired physical, chemical and biological data at high- frequency to model the lake processes at the appropriate scale. This core dataset with background information is openly available through the webportal (www. datalakes-eawag.ch).

The Limnology Center is looking for an early-career scientist interested in data science approaches to better understand and model lake processes. The successful candidate will be expected to analyse and integrate data from the LéXPLORE core dataset (including the autonomous moored profiler Thetis).

Main duties and responsibilities include :

  • To Perform statistical analyses and other data-driven investigations to exploit the LéXPLORE core dataset
  • To design and develop predictive models for key lake processes accross disciplines.
  • To work in close collaboration with scientists working on LéXPLORE platform to provide them with useful products
  • To assist in acquiring new data on LéXPLORE platform and help in the operations.
  • To write scientific publications
  • Your profile :

  • PhD in data science (mathematics, or statistics) or environmental science with demonstrated data science expercience, comfortable to work with multiple large environmental datasets
  • Excellent knowledge of lake sciences and lake ecosystem functioning, ideally with ability or desire to acquire substantial competences in physics, chemistry and biology
  • Strong experience in applying data science and machine learning techniques to heterogeneous datasets to predict their evolution
  • Demonstrable proficiency in data analysis and data visualisation
  • Ability to connect and work closely with scientists from different disciplines
  • Demonstrated interest in a scientific career including quality publications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (French is of additional advantage).
  • We offer :

The post-doc will be based within the Limnology Center at EPFL in Lausanne. We offer to work with novel data series from the very advanced floating laboratory on Lake Geneva. This platform is a hub for collaborations with more than 110 scientists from multiple fields, working on 32 different projects. The candidate will benefit from this collaborative, dynamic and enthusiastic working environment. The position comes with a competitive salary. The post- doc will be supervised by the Operational Director of the Limnology Center (Natacha Tofield Pasche) and by the Team Leader of Aquatic Physics and Datalakes Manager at EAWAG (Damien Bouffard).

Start date : 1st May 2022. Deadline for the application 17st January 2022. Interviews in February 2022.

Term of employment : Fixed-term (CDD)
