Postdoctoral Position in Quantum Crystallography

At the University of Bern, Switzerland, a Postdoctoral Position in Quantum Crystallography will be available from March 1st, 2023 , for a duration of 2 years. The position is embedded in a joint project conducted by the mineralogy group headed by Prof. Dr. Sergey Churakov at the Institute of Geological Sciences and the chemical crystallography group headed by PD Dr. Simon Grabowsky at the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences. For this research-only position, we are looking for an experienced postdoc for a 100% employment.

Your Tasks

Further development and application of quantum crystallographic methods to periodic network compounds and performing bonding analyses on them. Specifically, Hirshfeld Atom Refinement and X-ray constrained wavefunction fitting should be developed taking into account periodic-boundary conditions of crystalline systems. The method will be applied with increasing complexity starting from SiO2 polymorphs to more advanced structures such as zeolites.

Your Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD in a field of the natural sciences, preferably in chemistry, geochemisty, materials science, or physics. The successful candidate is expected to have at least 2 years of post-doctoral experience in the field of structural characterization or electronic structure calculations. Knowledge of quantum chemistry methods, programming skills, and X-ray structure determination are desired. Advanced English speaking and writing skills are a prerequisite.

We offer

The University of Bern is the third largest university in Switzerland. The position offers a world-class scientific environment with an outstanding infrastructure. It is embedded in a collaborative environment between chemistry and mineralogy.

Your Application

The application should comprise a cover letter including a statement describing the applicant's re-search and technical background as they relate to the position, a copy of the doctoral certificate, a Master of Science certificate (or equivalent), a curriculum vitae including a list of publications and the names of two referees.
