Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy commencing from August 1st 2023. The position is for a fixed-term period of four years.

The Department of Philosophy has a staff of around 70 people, including around 10 PhD- and postdoctoral fellows. The department offers a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a PhD-degree in Philosophy. Research at the department spans a wide area. Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The position as postdoctoral research fellow requires a Norwegian doctoral degree or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree in philosophy. The doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation within the closing date of the application. The PhD degree must be obtained prior to appointment.
  • The applicant must provide a project proposal, including a progress plan for the project's main activities, and a plan for publishing results in recognized international channels.
  • The successful candidate must be able to work independently in a well- structured way and have good cooperation skills.
  • In the assessment, the main emphasis will be placed upon the quality of the project proposal as well as the candidate's academic qualifications, publications and relevant experience. The relevance of the project to the research groups at the department will also be given weight. Strategic considerations, motivation, and the applicant's personal suitability will also be taken into account.

    The successful applicant will be expected to take an active part in the department's research environment.

    About postdoctoral positions:

    The position as postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment for four years with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The successful candidate will prepare a plan for qualifying for top academic positions in cooperation with the Head of Department. It is a requirement that the postdoctoral project is completed during the period of employment.

    25 per cent of the time comprises obligatory duties associated with teaching, dissemination of results and administration. Candidates may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

    The successful applicant will be expected to conform to the regulations that apply to the position and must accept that their primary residence will be in Bergen for the full term of the appointment.

  • The names and contact information for two reference persons. One of these must be a supervisor for the PhD-thesis.
  • Applications and attachments must be in Norwegian, another Scandinavian language or English. Documentation in other languages must be accompanied by certified translations. Attachments can be in either Word of PDF-format.
