  • LABERCA is a mixed research unit of the Nantes-Atlantic National College of Veterinary Medicine, Food science and Engineering (ONIRIS) and the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE). It is the French National Reference Laboratory for regular food control regarding growth promoters and several classes of environmental pollutants. It has been also involved in large scale biomonitoring studies including the French HBM program. The methodological development activity mainly advocates for the setting-up and application of novel and ground-breaking mass spectrometry technologies to identify and characterize environmental pollutants in food and biological matrices at ultra-trace levels (i.e. targeted approaches under ISO 17025 accreditation) but also applying global (i.e. suspect screening and non-targeted screening) characterization approaches, including exposomics, metabolomics and lipidomics. Overall, the research activities of the unit (conducted under ISO 9001 certification standard) consist in: (1) characterizing the human chemical exposome trough the environment-food-human continuum (2) characterizing the biological signatures associated to these exposures and (3) bringing these markers of exposure and/or effects, and the knowledge acquired, into a useful and finalized interpretation at the environment-food-health interface. LABERCA research is supported by platforms fully equipped with cutting edge mass spectrometry instruments (MS, HRMS, MS/MS, MSn, IRMS and EA) and part of the France Exposome and METABOHUB national infrastructures.

    The EndoxOmics Project is a collaborative project funded by the French Foundation for the Medical Research (FRM) with the ambition of 1) characterizing the associations between mixtures of persistent organic pollutants (POP) and the risk of endometriosis, and 2) identifying metabolic networks differentially regulated by endometriosis and POP exposure. We will analyze the blood samples from a case-cohort of 600 women within the French E3N study with and without endometriosis using high-throughput targeted and un-targeted MS-based methods. Advanced statistical and bioinformatics methods will be used to integrate the data. The consortium associated to this collaborative project includes the “Exposome and Heredity” INSERM U1018 and TOXALIM INRAE units, complementing the partnership with solid experience on epidemiology, statistics, pathway analysis and bioinformatics.

    The offered post-doctoral position will be focused on the high resolution mass spectrometry-based metabolomics analysis of human blood using both a targeted method (i.e. Biocrates kit MxP500) and an extended non-targeted approach for enlarging the range of captured effect and exposure markers. Thus, in addition to the targeted profiling, the candidate will be challenged to develop an efficient workflow for a large-cohort study covering the sample preparation, acquisition, data processing and annotation of metabolites and environmental pollutants differentially detected upon endometriosis status.

    Environment of employment of the successful candidate will be the LABERCA Unit based in Nantes, North-West of France. The LABERCA offers a unique Mass- Spectrometry platform with more than 30 cutting-edge devices and a dynamic environment of about 60 staff, researchers and PhD students in the area of analytical chemistry and environmental health. The candidate will benefit as well of the know-how and the high quality standards of the unit with more than 30 years of experience in the field of Mass-Spectrometry, under the direct supervision of specialists on metabolomics, exposomic, and advanced data analysis methods (Y. Guitton, JP Antignac, G Cano-Sancho).     This full-time short-term position is available for 12 month, but with the potential for extension upon the project progress. The starting date is expected to be November 2022. The position is associated to a ~ 2746.48 euros/month salary before taxes.

    Application requirements: We seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with a PhD in the area of HRMS-based metabolomics, exposomics or analytical chemistry with experience and demonstrated success of working independently and as part of a team in analytical or academic research facility. Essential skills for this position include experience in biological sample preparation techniques, strong practical expertise in liquid chromatography methods, LC-HRMS based metabolomics and experience in metabolomics software (e.g., XCMS, MS-DIAL) for data processing, annotation and statistical analysis. Experience with large-cohorts and high-throughput targeted methods will be an asset.
