  • The selected candidate will conduct original research on the response of secondary Amazonian forests to future climatic conditions. She or he will contribute to improving the modelling of secondary forests that regrow after a nearly complete removal of forest cover due to land use, and will seek to understand whether these secondary forests are likely to be disproportionally affected by drought or heat waves, relative to old-growth forests. The ultimate goal is to improve the description of tropical forest response to climate change in Earth System Models (ESMs). The position will include a data acquisition component for architectural, photosynthetic and hydrological functional traits of secondary forest tree species, consolidation of already existing information on secondary forest tree species, and integration in forest dynamic models, such as the individual-based TROLL simulator. Representative scenarios from across Amazonia will be run to explore the response of secondary forests to future climatic conditions. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate actively within the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments (NGEE) Tropics project participants (https: // ngee- She or he is also expected perform analyses, produce documented science datasets, lead peer-reviewed publications, in an international and interdisciplinary research environment.

We are seeking applications for one highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to study the response of secondary Amazonian forest trees to current and future climatic conditions

The postdoctoral fellowship is open in Toulouse, France, at the EDB (Evolution and Biological Diversity; https: // research unit, for up to 18 months, extendable if funding permits. This position will be in collaboration with Jerome Chave (CNRS Toulouse) and Jeffrey Chambers (Berkeley Lab, USA).

    Eligibility criteria

The applicant must have a Ph.D. or in one of the following fields: forest ecology, plant physiology, ecological modeling. Required qualifications include: field experience in tropical forest environments good knowledge of plant physiology quantitative data analysis programming skills in a scientific language (e.g. R, C++).
