About the position

We have a vacancy for one Postdoctoral Fellow position in Marine Bioacoustics at the Marine Section of the Department of Biology in the group of Prof. Ana Širović.

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

The research in the group is focused on the development and use of acoustic methods to study marine animals. Specifically, the postdoctoral research scientist will primarily be responsible for assisting in the project focusing on the study of the dynamics of baleen whale occurrence in Southern California based on passive and active acoustic mooring data. Field work as well as analysis of previously collected data will be expected as part of the project. Previous ocean-going research experience as well as experience maintaining and deploying acoustic recorders is a plus. The position will also have partial teaching duties. This position will contribute to the expansion of a newly- established research group at NTNU and the candidate will be expected to be a productive contributor to the process.

You will report to the Head of Deparment.

Duties of the position
  • Analyse long-term passive acoustic data from combined passive-active moorings deployed in Southern California to answer questions of baleen whale occurrence
  • Develop ecological models of cetacean-prey interactions
  • Participate in field work as required by the project
  • Submit publications to peer-reviewed journals
  • Present research at national and international meetings
  • Partial teaching duties over the course of several years
  • Advising of Master's students
  • Participate in regular lab activities: lab meetings, field logistic operations, collaboration with colleagues, etc.
  • Required selection criteria
  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD
  • You must have a professionally relevant background in marine biology/oceanography and bioacoustics
  • Solid expertise in the analysis of long-term passive acoustic data
  • Some experience with ecological model development using long-term time series data
  • Solid expertise in MATLAB and R programming languages
  • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Very good written and oral English language skills
  • The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

    Preferred selection criteria
  • Experience with cetacean acoustic data and knowledge of cetacean calling behaviour
  • Proficiency in ecological model development
  • Experience with oceanographic research cruises, mooring deployments, and data collection protocols at sea
  • Knowledge of ocean data repositories and experience extracting data from such sources
  • Experience in academic teaching at the undergraduate and MSc student level
  • Experience in project management

  • Salary and conditions

    As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 545 300 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

    The period of employment is 2.5 years with teaching duties.

    The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

    The position is subject to external funding.

    It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
