  • The Mucosal Immunology laboratory at the Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG, Izmir Turkey) has one (1) postdoctoral fellow opening for a nationally-funded project on the role of i NKT cells in airway vaccination. Candidates should have a background in immunology or in bioinformatics and demonstrate a strong desire to make major contributions to the understanding of the immune system.

    Eligibility criteria

    In the evaluation, emphasis will be placed on experience, personal suitability, and the ability to work in an inter-disciplinary environment.

    Selection process

    Remuneration is provided by a Tubitak funded stipend. The position can start immediately or as agreed upon. An offer of employment is contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check.     Who we are:

    - The Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG) is a recently (2014) created advanced biomedical research and innovation center located on the health campus of the Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey. Its 22.250 m2 closed space and its modern, state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities make IBG the largest and best-equipped biomedical research infrastructure in Turkey. IBG is one of only four national Centre of Excellence (‘Research Center') under the auspices of the Ministry of Development and the only one in the biomedical research field.     - Dr. Gerhard Wingender is working on the role of innate-like T cells in inflammatory lung diseases and cancer, utilizing human patient material and mouse in vivo models.

    - Dr. Gokhan Karakulah is working on computational sequence analysis and development of bioinformatics tools and is the director of IBG's Bioinformatics Platform (IBG-BIP).

    Candidates with a background in either (A) immunology or (B) bioinformatics will be considered:

    (A) Immunology: The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree in natural science and has 4+ years' experience or formal training in a laboratory setting. You will have demonstrated experience with cell isolation, cell culture, as well as immunological methods, including flow cytometry. Experience with mouse handling and in vivo experiments would be an advantage. Immunology candidates will be supervised by Dr. Wingender.

    (B) Bioinformatics: The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree in computational or natural science and has 4+ years' experience or formal training in computational biology, bioinformatics, or system biology. You will have demonstrated experience with large biological datasets, including genomics and transcriptomic datasets and biological pathways/network analysis. Experience in one or more of the following areas is expected: Linux, R language, scripting, and object-oriented programming. Wet-lab experience would be an advantage. You will have the desire to work closely and collaboratively with bench scientists to solve complex biological problems. Bioinformatic candidates will be co-supervised by Dr. Wingender and Dr. Karakulah.

    The candidate must be able to work independently and progress in the research work by own achievements with strong organizational and time managing skills. He/she must be creative in solving experimental challenges. Strong written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to explain your research findings to non-experts, are essential.
