Postdoctoral Fellow (m/f/d) | Brain Tissue Engineering

The Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, Halle, Germany, Department of Nanophotonics, Integration, and Neural Technology led by Director Prof. Joyce Poon, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow (m/f/d) in Brain Tissue Engineering for a project to build circuits out of biological neurons for computation. The research mission of the department is to invent devices and microsystems for future computing. English is the working language at the Institute.

Your tasks
  • Collaborate with the team to design and build neuronal circuits that perform computations
  • Use optogenetics to control neuronal circuits
  • Design and make neuronal circuits and tissues using 3D bioprinting and microfluidic technology
  • Simulate the neuronal circuits and compare the experiments with simulations
  • When applicable, compare neuronal circuits with artificial neural network models
  • Train and work closely with other postdoctoral fellows, students, and staff
  • Present research results in international scientific journals and conferences
  • Your profile
  • You have earned or will soon earn a Ph.D. Degree in bioengineering, neurobiology, applied physics, or a related discipline
  • You are motivated by grand challenges
  • You have experience in culturing neurons, transfection, and optogenetics
  • You have experience in evaluating neurons and neural tissue responses using a variety of techniques
  • Experience with optical imaging techniques (e.g., 2-photon microscopy) is an asset
  • You have a demonstrated track-record of scientific productivity
  • You excel at solving problems with creativity and resourcefulness
  • You are a fast learner and excited to learn about other disciplines
  • You are an effective team player who excels in a fast-paced, highly dynamic, interdisciplinary and international environment
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills in English
