Postdoctoral fellow in theoretical modeling of water including nuclear spin effects

Stockholm University

Sweden

June 17, 2021

Description

at theDepartment of Physics. Closing date: 17 June, 2021.

The Department of Physics is one of the biggest departments within the Faculty of Science and supports a broad range of basic research in experimental and theoretical physics. It has about 250 employees of which 95 are PhD students. Many have been internationally recruited. The Department is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which apart from the Department of Physics houses the Department of Astronomy, the Physics Departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita).

The Department of Physics and Stockholm University is affiliated to Stockholm Dual Career Network (SDCN) that supports expat partners with professional events, career-related advice and by building a social network in their new hometown. www. sdcn.se.

Project description Within the ERC Advanced Grant GAS-WAT (Gases in Water, Prof. Lars G.M. Pettersson, PI) one subproject is to investigate possible effects of nuclear spin-coupling, resulting in ortho and para water molecules. For this we will need to further develop quantum chemical codes that treat light nuclei on a par with the electrons.

A particular focus will be on describing rotating molecules and the dynamics in changing hydrogen-bonding situations. The theory group of Prof. Pettersson works within the XSoLaS combined experimental and theory group in the Chemical Physics Division at the Department of Physics within Stockholm University (https:// xsolasgroup.fysik.su.se/).

Main responsibilities The position involves methods development and implementation of nuclear wave function techniques with particular focus on applications to water in its various aggregation states.

Qualification requirements Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

The assessment is based on documented theoretical knowledge and experience relevant to the area, knowledge of and experience in theoretical techniques and methods, analytical and programming skills, ability to work well in groups as well as independently, and personal commitment. Strong motivation is considered a key component for a successful outcome of the postdoctoral research.

Terms of employment The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2021-08-01 or as per agreement.
