    Additional comments

With almost 10.000 employees more than half of whom are researchers with university degrees, the Czech Academy of Sciences is the largest research- performing institution in the Czech Republic.

The primary mission of the Academy and its 54 institutes, including the Institute of Botany, is to conduct basic research in a broad spectrum of natural, technical and social sciences and the humanities. Researchers also participate in education, particularly through doctoral study programmes for young researchers and by teaching at universities. The Academy fosters collaboration with applied research and industry.

The Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences is one of the main centres of botanical research in the Czech Republic and carries out fundamental research on plant species, populations and communities. It offers researchers an excellent environment for field research, common garden and laboratory experiments as well as laboratory analyses.

The Institute is composed of three Research Divisions located in Průhonice, on the outskirts of Prague, in Třeboň and in Brno.

Researchers of the Department of Invasion Ecology of the Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences, study the biology and ecology of invasive as well as many introduced and naturalised species. They also research the effects of introduced species on native flora and communities.

The Department´s main research topics are:

  • factors determining naturalisation and spread of alien species
  • the role of species traits in plant invasions
  • invasiveness of alien plant species and invasibility of habitats
  • developing schemes for standardised scoring of impacts of invasive plants and animals
  • global database of naturalised alien plants (GloNAF)
  • case studies of invasive species

Průhonice is small town just beyond the boundaries of the city of Prague and is famous for its park and castle. The Průhonice Park is a beautiful natural park founded in the late 19th century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and attracts thousands of visitors every year. The offices of some of the Departments of the IB Průhonice Division are located in the Průhonice Castle which provides an interesting backdrop to the busy life of a modern research institution.
