Position Function:

We are recruiting a Postdoc Researcher in the department of Forestry at Mississippi State University to investigate applications for multi- scale/multi-sensor satellite retrievals of evapotranspiration (ET), vegetation index (VI) and forest structure in monitoring response of rangelands, forest, and croplands to management and climate. These timeseries will be used to assess vegetation health over time, and to upscale in situ measurements to landscape scale. Other applications may involve susceptibility of forest land to wildfire and water accounting in croplands.

Salary Grade: UC

Department Profile:

The Department of Forestry is one of three departments in the College of Forest Resources and the Forest and Wildlife Research Center at Mississippi State University. The faculty have diverse teaching, research, service, and outreach expertise in the disciplines of forest biology and watershed management; forest economics, management, and policy; and forest measurements, biometrics, and spatial technologies. The Department has two undergraduate degree programs, Forestry and Natural Resource and Environmental Conservation, each accredited by the Society of American Foresters with ~200 students in addition to ~40 graduate students in both on-campus and distance education programs. The University's John W. Starr Memorial Forest (a +8,000-acre research and teaching forest), the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, and the Tombigbee National Forest are located in close proximity to the University and used for teaching, research, and Extension/outreach activities.

Mississippi State University is a Carnegie Very High Research Activity (R1) institution and a land grant university with a strong connection to the state- wide Extension Service. The University is in Starkville, a medium-size college town in northeast Mississippi (www. msstate.edu/web/about).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will lead and participate in research on vegetation health using multi-scale/multi-sensor satellite data, for example, Landsat, VIIRS, Sentinel, GEDI and hyperspectral data. There will be opportunities to collaborate with scientists from USDA, USGS and NASA.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Ph.D. degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Remote Sensing or relevant fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

- A robust educational background related to remote sensing - Strong mathematical and computing skills - Knowledge of soils, vegetation water use and forest structure - Strong programming expertise analyzing large images using C, Fortran, R, IDL/Matlab or similar computing language - Familiarity with the Google Earth Engine programming environment - Demonstrated skills in scientific writing, publications, and communication.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent written and oral communication skills are expected.
