The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Clinical Sciences is one of six Institutes within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. We conduct research and education that puts people's health and quality of life in focus. We represent 16 different research areas and are divided into four sections. Through a fruitful collaboration with the healthcare and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we have developed joint projects and meeting places that benefits both health care and research

The Department of Surgery at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg invites applications for a postdoctoral position in cancer research, with placement at the Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research. The research group has a strong desire to generate novel targets for cancer therapy and translate basic research findings into new and innovative clinical trials.

The project will be conducted at the Sayin lab which is positioned in the intersection between lung cancer therapeutics, cancer metabolism and redox biology. We are building a precision medicine platform combining the latest technologies in lung cancer research and metabolomics to establish an extensive translational lung cancer group at Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research.

Subject area

Cancer research with a focus on neurobiology and immunology

Subject area description

The purpose of the project is to identify therapeutic targets for treatment of brain metastasis in patients diagnosed with lung cancer. Most deaths in lung cancer patients are due to lung cancer metastasis, in which case the brain is the most common target organ, with brain metastasis happening in about half of all cases as the disease progresses, where BM are detected in 21% of patients with lung cancer at the time of diagnosis. While there have been great advances in the treatment of the primary lung tumors, treatments targeting the secondary brain metastasis tumors are scarce. We have established a model for investigation of non-small cell lung carcinoma lung adenocarcinoma brain metastasis. We aim to study effects of membrane bound proteins on brain metastasis in an in vivo CRISPR/CAS9 screen. Following identified targets for pharmacological modulation of cancer cell blood brain barrier invasion novel modulating compounds will be synthesized. Today, treatment for lung cancer BM is scarce. Patients typically don't survive more than six months. New targets and molecules can significantly improve mortality.

Duties

The research project aims mainly at studying molecular mechanisms which underlie lung cancer associated blood brain barrier cell invasions using new animal and cell models. The goal is to improve prevention and treatment of brain metastasis. The position contains a lot of laboratory work, problem solving as well as implementing new techniques in the laboratory. Identifying and setting-up relevant new collaborations is also expected for a successful project. The postdoctoral fellow will also be required to teach and supervise graduate and undergraduate students in the lab.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Assessment criteria

The successful candidate should have experience in the field of cancer biology, strong experience of animal and cell model development. Other requirements are extensive practical laboratory experience, experience with molecular biology techniques such as cloning, Western blot, primary culturing and cancer-related assays, experience in working with therapeutic drugs, rodent in vivo experience. Having experience of microscopy techniques such as live cell imaging is beneficial and strong experience using in vivo models for investigation of peripheral and central nervous system interactions and documented knowledge of sensory neuroscience is highly meriting. Besides being able to drive the project, the candidate should also be able to work in close collaboration with other lab members and have experience in teaching graduate and under-graduate students. Meriting is strong self-discipline, problem- solution oriented workstyle, organizational skills and good communicative and interpersonal team skills. It is understood that the applicant masters scientific writing in English and has good general communication skills in English.

Following the qualitative overall assessment of skills and proficiency, applicants will be selected who are expected to have the best prerequisites for implementing and developing current tasks as well as contributing to a positive development of the scientific group.

Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for 24 months, 100 % of full-time and is placed at Department of Surgery at Institute of Clinical Sciences. Starting date; As soon as possible.
