We are seeking a highly motivated candidate for a full-time 3-year postdoc position. The position is funded by our interdepartmental EFFORT project, in which we employ a multi-method cognitive neuroscience approach to investigate cognitive effort (promoters: Prof. Dr. Roeljan Wiersema, Prof. Dr. Wim Notebaert, Prof. Dr. Nico Boehler, Prof. Dr. Ruth Krebs). See also: https: // The current position will focus on cognitive effort in ADHD and the postdoc will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Roeljan Wiersema. At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.

Individuals with ADHD often experience difficulties with investing cognitive effort when required, leading to problems in daily life. However, the reasons are not well understood. There is ongoing debate as to whether a deficit or altered motivation underlies these difficulties. We consider cognitive effort to be a multi-faceted dynamic process. The candidate will investigate how cognitive effort is evaluated (willingnes to invest effort), allocated (translating willingness into actual effort investment) and sustained over time, in adults with and without ADHD. Behavioral and cognitive neuroscience methods (pupillometry, fMRI and/or EEG) will be applied.

  • You are expected to have a PhD in psychology or cognitive neuroscience (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the diploma and the starting date).
  • You have good writing skills, demonstrated by publications.
  • Prior experience with EEG and/or fMRI, as well as excellent programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab) are required for this position. Familiarity with multi-method approaches would be an asset.
  • Experience or affiliation with ADHD is a plus.
  • Dutch Language skills would be useful but are not a requirement.

  • We offer you a contract of 3 year.
  • You will be working in a stimulating interdisciplinary team and environment. There will be regular meetings with all of the other promoters and researchers involved.
  • Access to a research-dedicated MR scanner, multiple EEG systems, TMS, and eye-tracking devices.
  • Your contract will start on 1/11/2022 at the earliest and 1/1/2023 the latest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale PD1. Click here for more information about our salary scales.
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, a bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
