    The Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science (ESI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria's leading non-university research and science institution, performs cutting-edge research setting the ground for new material concepts, educates outstanding students and scientists in Materials Science and collaborates with leading industrial and scientific partners. The institute concentrates its research currently on Structural Materials, Materials for Information Technology, Materials for Energy and High Temperature Applications, and novel Bulk Nanocrystalline Materials. ESI is pushing the frontiers in understanding microstructure – property relationships by combining advanced experimental and modelling techniques. The institute is offering a

    Postdoc Position (fm)

    (full-time, 40h per week)

    in the framework of the FWF project “Live 3D imaging with sub-nanometer resolution” for a 2-year term of employment.

    The aim of the project is to image dislocation movement and interaction in 3D during in-situ deformation in the transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

    The successful candidate will be part of an international team whose research activities focus on advanced nanocharacterization of complex materials. You will develop new ground-breaking 4D-STEM experiments, write scripts for microscope control and data analysis and perform in-situ deformation experiments in the TEM. You are expected to present your findings at international conferences and publish the results in top-rated international journals.

    Your profile

  • PhD in Materials Sciences, Chemistry, Physics or equivalent.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with transmission electron microscopy.
  • The candidate is expected to write scripts for the automated analysis of large datasets. Therefore, interest in data analysis, scripting and machine learning is required.
  • Excellent track-record demonstrating the ability to work independently and publish scientific findings.
  • Very good communication skills in spoken and written English are mandatory.

    The appointment begins as at the earliest possible date (ca. December 2022). The annual gross salary is € 56.861,00, according to the salary scheme of the Austrian Science Fund. (FWF)
