  • - Implement new astrophysical and dark matter analyses with cutting edge techniques (machine learning) and commit in open-science reproducible analysis results and pipeline. - Produce constraints on astrophysical emission and dark matter models - Contribute to porting suite of datasets (including phenomenological studies), simulation software packages and analysis tools into the ESCAPE Data lake and Software catalogue services for open science.

    The CNRS LAPP 1 (Laboratoire d'Annecy de Physique des Particules) laboratory is opening a postdoctoral researcher position in the context of the ESCAPE 2 scientific consortium and EOSC-FUTURE Science Projects 3, which aims to bring together on a common science platform, new scientific findings as well as the data and analysis software of a number of major world- class projects in particle and astroparticle physics.

    Within ESCAPE, large “Test Science Projects” (TSP) will be deployed to demonstrate new cutting-edge science capabilities, in particular those involving cross experiment collaboration and science outcomes and to validate on behalf of the science communities, the open-science solutions developed within ESCAPE. The Dark Matter TSP will bring together on a common science platform, the data and analysis software of collider, direct and indirect detection experiments involved in ESCAPE.

    The project will be done under the supervision of Dr. F. Calore, LAPTh (Laboratoire d'Annecy-le-Vieux de Physique Théorique) 4 (hosted in the same premises), who is the co-coordinator of the Dark Matter TSP and leads a vibrant research group working at the interface between high-energy astrophysics and particle physics with a focus on dark matter indirect detection.

    Postdoctoral offer: The successful candidate will work on astrophysical emission and dark matter indirect detection at very high-energy with gamma rays. Theoretical predictions, data analysis and phenomenological sensitivity studies are expected to be performed by the postdoc, extending already existing open source software of broad use. Synergies with future gamma-ray telescopes (CTA) and optical surveys, such as the LSST/Vera Rubin Observatory, will also be explored.

    LAPP is a scientific research laboratory located in Annecy, 50 kms from Geneva founded in 1976. LAPP is a joint laboratory of the University Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) and IN2P3 (Institut de Physique Nucléaire et de Physique des Particules) institute of CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). More than 150 people are working at LAPP. Research carried out at LAPP aims at studying the ultimate constituents of the matter, their fundamental interactions, as well as exploring their connections with the large structures of the Universe.

    The European Union member states, recognising the challenges of data driven research in pursuing excellent science, have launched the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) initiative. LAPP leads the ESCAPE collaboration and its participation in EOSC and in a series of related initiatives such as the H2020 EOSC Future project. The ESCAPE actions aim at delivering solutions to ensure integration of data, tools, services and scientific software; to foster common approaches to implement open-data stewardship; to establish interoperability within EOSC as an integrated multi-probe facility for fundamental science. At regional level LAPP leads actions for the engagement of scientists in society such as IDEFICS.

    Eligibility criteria

    Technical knowledge: - Programming: python, C++ - Experience with data analysis in astroparticle physics (Fermi-LAT, CTA) - Expertise in dark matter phenomenology and gamma-ray analysis tools is recommended. - Fluent in English, speaking and writing - Basic knowledge of French could be useful

    Relationship skills: - Creativity, autonomy, rigorous work - Good interpersonal and communication skills - Excellent writing, speaking and presentation skills in English - Good team work skills, as the candidate will be working within a team of postdocs from different experiments who are also implementing new analysis pipelines

    Desired work experience: less than 2 years after PhD
