The UFZ

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission: Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

The job

Understanding drivers behind large climate-related impacts is crucial for improving climate risk assessments under present and future climate conditions. Complex interactions between climatic drivers in space and time make an attribution from impacts to climate conditions difficult, rendering climate risk projections highly uncertain. New developments in the area of machine learning and in particular interpretable machine learning offer new opportunities to attribute climate impacts to specific weather conditions that are characterized by complex interactions in space, time and between variables. The Young Investigator Group COMPOUNDX (Detecting compound climate features of extreme impacts) is looking for an expert in data science and machine learning who is interested in applying their skills in better understanding drivers of extreme climate impacts.

Your tasks

We seek someone who can complement our team to

  • Apply (interpretable) machine learning to better understand climate impacts such as floods, crop failure, low carbon uptake or large wildfires
  • Follow new developments in (interpretable) machine learning and translate/apply them to environmental science
  • We offer
  • Excellent technical facilities which are without parallel
  • The freedom you need to bridge the difficult gap between basic research and close to being ready for application
  • Work in inter-disciplinary, multinational teams and excellent links with national and international research networks
  • A vibrant region with a high quality of life and a wide cultural offering for a balance between family and professional life
  • Interesting career opportunities and an extensive range of training and further education courses
  • Your profile
  • Excellent data science and machine learning skills including deep learning (e.g. LSTMs, CNNs)
  • Experience with common machine learning toolboxes such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras or similar
  • Interest in interpretable machine learning
  • Experience with code sharing and version control e.g. via GitHub
  • Self-driven personality able to work both independently and in a team
  • Prepared to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment
  • PhD in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Environmental Sciences or related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • From this employer
