Please note: You must not have resided or exercised your main activity (for example work or studies) in France for more than 12 months during the 3 years preceding the date of recruitment.

A postdoctoral position (2 years) is available in the group “RNA biogenesis, architecture and interactions” led by Carine Tisné in the Institute of Physico-chemical Biology (IBPC) in the center of Paris, to work on RNA maturation. RNAs are heavily co- or post-transcriptionally modified, with the largest diversity of modifications found in tRNAs. Given the widespread presence of post-transcriptional RNA modifications in all classes of RNAs and all domains of life and their dynamics, RNA functions must have evolved under the influences of RNA modifications. Many RNA modifications or the respective enzymes are associated with human disease, especially cancer. We want to elucidate how RNA maturation control or influences RNA functions. A multi- disciplinary approach involving biochemical, biophysical, and cellular experiments will be used to address these questions of RNA biology. The ultimate goal of the project is to advance our understanding of RNA-based regulation, by means of biochemical reconstitution and structural characterization of protein/RNA complexes. Candidates will hold or are about to be awarded a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biophysics, or Molecular Biology and must have a proven track record of research achievements. Previous experience in the analysis of multi-protein complexes and protein/RNA interactions, as well as familiarity with biophysical techniques such as cryo-electron microscopy and single-particle analysis, would be an advantage. This position may lead to a submission to the CNRS national competition for a permanent position. PI: Carine TISNE, UMR 8261; tisne@ibpc.fr

All the experiments will be carried out at the CNRS, at the Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology on the Curie campus, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. All the necessary equipment is already in the laboratory or within a very close radius.

The project is part of the COFUND FP-DYNAMO-PARIS program, an initiative for fundamental research, which offers an interdisciplinary environment in the center of Paris to train the scientists of tomorrow in the field of Physico- chemical biology. The goal of this research program is to integrate the knowledge of gene expression, membrane and structural biology, and bioenergetics in bacteria, chloroplasts, and mitochondria within the general context of improving our understanding of the biogenesis of energy-transducing membranes. These studies involve the use of advanced technologies including structural biology (NMR, X-ray crystallography, and CryoEM), transcriptomics, mass spectrometry, synthetic biology, microfluidics, computational modeling, and visualization. Post-doctoral researchers will have the opportunity to develop their research projects in a dynamic scientific environment covering three main research themes: i) RNA biology from bacteria to chloroplasts, ii) Dynamics of membrane systems and iii) computational modeling of molecular assemblies. Post-doctoral researchers will have the opportunity to develop their research projects in a dynamic scientific environment covering three main research themes: i) RNA biology from bacteria to chloroplasts, ii) Dynamics of membrane systems and iii) computational modeling of molecular assemblies. They will benefit from the supervision of internationally recognized experts in their fields, from a worldwide network of renowned institutions, research infrastructures, and state-of-the-art technical know-how which will enable them to perfect their scientific skills, make themselves known, and increase their competitiveness in the labor market. Specific training will be offered to post-docs through participation in the EMBO course on “Laboratory leadership for post-docs” during a retreat in Padova and through their participation in complementary training events dedicated to soft skills.

Evaluation The position is designed as a first step in a research career, and the evaluation of candidates will be based primarily on their research qualifications and skills that can complement and strengthen ongoing research at the partner institutions. Step 1. The applications of each eligible candidate will be evaluated by independent international experts within the relevant research theme. Eligible candidates will be evaluated based on merit, motivation for the program, academic excellence, and personal qualifications such as collaboration and communication skills. Step 2. Up to three candidates will be selected for a video interview with independent experts for each open position. After the interview, short-listed candidates will be invited to a remote conference with the project director and a DYNAMO board member to define the general scope of the project, training, and research environment. Applicants will be asked to write a 3-page project proposal, contributing their original ideas, and will have 2 weeks to submit it. Step 3. Each project proposal will be evaluated by one of the independent experts and the DYNAMO board member who evaluated the applicant in the previous steps. Final selection will be made based on the scores obtained in Steps 1, 2, and 3. The minimum score must be above 20/40. The best candidate will be offered the postdoctoral position with a start date of January 1 to April 30, 2023.

The CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) is an equal opportunity employer. In addition, FP-DYNAMO-PARIS is committed to promoting the role of women in science and thus explicitly encourages them to apply.
