At the School of Business, Society and Engineering our students are studying to be for example Bachelors or Masters of Engineering, political scientists and business administrators. Here we have the research specialisations of Industrial Engineering and Management, and Future Energy. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.

Position description

The research environment Future Energy and the project “Boosting sustainable vertical farming by CO2 fertilization from air carbon capture (Carbon2Food)” focuses on development of energy-efficient and cost-effective solution for indoor vertical urban farm (IUVF) based on the CO2 fertilization effect, which uses the CO2 captured from the air in the indoor greenhouse. It will be accomplished by development of cutting-edge solutions including experimental work, process modeling and simulation and optimization of the system.

Specific research objectives are to: (1) Understand the CO2 fertilization effect in different stages of plant growth. (2) Find the optimal strategy for CO2 addition temporally and spatially. (3) Optimize the design and operation of CO2 capture in order to minimize energy usage and cost. (4) Optimize the integration of CO2 capture and IUVF in in the local building to maximize the benefit.

The position is a temporary employment of 2 years.

Qualifications requirements

The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in Environmental Engineering or Agriculture Sciences. The applicant must have completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period.

In particular, the applicant should have a background in one or more of the following areas: experimental work, modeling, and simulation of various environmental and energy systems and agricultural applications. It is merit to have experience in programming tools such as MATLAB, R, Python or equivalent and CFD software (e.g., Ansys) and good knowledge of mathematical optimization.

The position requires a strong motivation for research, good verbal and written communication skills in English.

An interest to apply academic knowledge and to do research in cooperation with industrial partners nationally and internationally as well as experience from working in projects that involve achieving both academic and industrial related objectives.

A background that closely relates to the project objectives will be a strong merit. The applicant should clearly explain in the application how her/his own competence and knowledge could be applied to meet the research objectives of the project and to enhance competence of the research group. It is merit if the candidate has experiences from teaching activities.
