PostDoc in Environmental Economics

100%

Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern Start of employment: 01.06.2023 or earliest convenience, limited for 3 years

As the University's competence hub for sustainability transformations, the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) fosters interdisciplinary research, implementation and teaching concerned with transformation and sustainable development. We shape our research agenda in long-standing North- South partnerships, our emphasis being on transformative science and transdisciplinary approaches. Research is at the core of our activities. However, we also have a strong record of both, hands-on implementation, education for sustainable development as well as science-policy-society engagement.

Duties

Within the SNSF-funded Biodiversa+ project INSPIRE (INtegrated Spatial PlannIng across REalms for biodiversity conservation and human development in a context of change) we are offering a 3-year PostDoc position in environmental economics. INSPIRE aims at creating a unified decision-support framework that addresses simultaneously multiple challenges that have limited the effectiveness of conservation action in the past. The PostDoc will derive monetary values for ecosystem services by applying the exchange value approach within the project's 3 case study areas: Tagus River catchment, estuary and nearby sea (Portugal/Spain); Aegean Sea and river catchments (Greece), and Lake Neusiedl and Seewinkel wetlands(Austria). The PostDoc will also develop a typology of integration mechanisms within policy instruments that address cross-realm and cross-sector dependencies.

  • Develop a structured and broad overview of mechanisms for policy integration to meet the needs of conservation at the crossroads of terrestrial, freshwater, and marine realms. For each of the elements of the typology, provide empirical examples from the project's case studies.
  • Derive monetary values for multiple ecosystem services in each of the project's case study areas.
  • Coordinate the selection of ecosystem services relevant to each case study with the other team members.
  • Conduct fieldwork in the three case study areas with support of an assistant.
  • Draft research papers and project reports.
  • Requirements

The candidate should meet the following requirements:

  • PhD in environmental or ecological economics
  • Expertise in the field of monetary valuation, especially on the exchange value approach (or willingness to learn)
  • Experience in policy design analysis especially related to conservation or water topics
  • Experience in conducting socio-economic fieldwork
  • Excellent command of English as well as either Portuguese, Spanish, or Greek
  • We offer

  • A learning space for competences in sustainability science and global development
  • A well-networked, globally active, interdisciplinary team
  • Insights into a broad range of research and implementation projects
  • Perspectives to engage with partners from academia, civil society, the private sector and public administration
  • Employment terms commensurate with the guidelines of the Canton of Bern
  • A flexible model of annual worktime
