    Water-based lubricants are experiencing renewed interest due to, among other things, their biodegradability and potentially reduced carbon footprint. To develop new formulations with a wider field of application, progress is needed in understanding the lubrication mechanisms of mechanical contacts, particularly in terms of the formation and maintenance of a lubricating film separating the two opposing surfaces.

    In this context, the objective of this work is to analyze the local chemical composition by infrared spectroscopy upstream and within a rolling/sliding elastohydrodynamic contact. This analysis will make it possible to identify the molecular species responsible for the mechanisms of lubricating film formation and friction reduction in order to develop new formulations with a low carbon footprint.

    The LTDS is a Joint Research Unit of the CNRS (INSIS) established within three engineering schools and structured into four teams. In the field of engineering, the research carried out within the laboratory is multidisciplinary, mainly in the fields of solid mechanics, chemistry and physics of materials, civil engineering. This research is based on cutting-edge experimentation backed by advanced numerical and phenomenological modeling. The post-doctorate will be based at the Ecole centrale de Lyon within the Tribology, Physico-Chemistry and Dynamics of Interfaces team.

    Eligibility criteria

    - PhD in physics/chemistry with skills in infra-red spectroscopy - Knowledge in tribology and/or polymers in solution is a bonus
