  • Project Overview:

In a social context that promotes individual mobility as the main route to upward mobility, this project aims to show how the permeability of the social hierarchy contributes to the construction of ambivalent stereotypes about social groups. Social perception is articulated around two fundamental dimensions: the competence dimension (assurance, efficiency) and the warmth dimension (integrity, sociability). The content of stereotypes is ambivalent and is constructed on the basis of compensatory perceptions: groups of high social status are perceived (and perceive themselves) as more competent than warm, while groups of low social status are perceived (and perceive themselves) as more warm than competent. The objective of this project is to test the impact of changes in the permeability of the social hierarchy on the construction of stereotypes with members of low social status groups (Axis 1) and with members of high social status groups (Axis 2).
