The post doctoral researcher will develop brain imaging (near-infrared
spectroscopy, NIRS) experiments exploring how prosody, together with other
cues, might help young infants learn the basic grammatical structure of their
native language(s) and how it shapes their neural correlates. The candidate
is expected to design and set up experiments, create stimuli, test infant
participants, analyze the data and take the lead in the preparation of
publications.
The Laboratoire Psychologie de la Perception (CNRS & Université Paris
Descartes, UMR8242; 45 rue des Saints-Pères, 75006, Paris, FRANCE) is
inviting applications for a 1-year (renewable), full-time post doctoral
position in early speech perception and language acquisition. The post
doctoral researcher will join an ERC-funded project
(https: // sites.google.com/site/juditgervain/erc-babyrhythm), investigating
the bootstrapping effect of early prosodic experience on language acquisition.
The expected starting date is 15th January 2019.
The speech perception / language acquisition researcher's main mission will be
to develop theoretical and methodological tools and acquire brain imaging data
to better understand how early prosodic experience lays the foundations for
later language development.
The Laboratoire Psychologie de la Perception (LPP) is a CNRS & Université
Paris Descartes mixed research unit specializing in research of human
perception and cognition. It has one of the largest infant testing facilities
in France and hosts internationally renowned language acquisition experts. As
of 1st an 2019, the LPP will merge with other research groups to form the
Integrative Neuroscience and Cognition Center (INCC, UMR8002, CNRS &
Université de Paris), a multidisciplinary hub of different approaches to
neuroscience from the molecular to the behavioral/cognitive level. The
candidate will have the opportunity to interact with the whole INCC community.
Eligibility criteria
The candidate will hold a PhD in Cognitive Science, with extensive experience
in language acquisition research. At the theoretical level, the candidate will
have a solid background in linguistics, neuroscience and developmental
psychology, in particular in language acquisition theories. Familiarity with
non-linguistic modulators of learning (such as attention) is a plus. At the
methodological level, the candidate is expected to have considerable expertise
in infant testing, using both behavioral and imaging methods. A good command
of NIRS is a must. Fluency in English as well as in French (the language of
infant testing) is desirable.
As the researcher will be in regular contact with young infants and their
families excellent relation skills are required, as well as good
organizational skills, punctuality and rigor. The candidate needs to be able
to work well in teams.
