Job Summary

Perform independent research in collaboration with the principal investigator in biochemistry, specifically directed towards the mechanistic understanding of how molecular chaperones in the Hsp70 family facilitate protein folding and trafficking in the cell, what role they play in assembly of protein complexes, how they are modulated by post-translational modifications, and how they interact with their co-chaperones. The post-doctoral research associate will supervise undergraduate students, participate in the writing of manuscripts and grant applications, and present his/her work at national and international meetings.

Essential Functions

Examples of duties:

  • Perform research that integrates biophysical methods and in-cell experiments to understand the function of cellular networks of molecular chaperones and the mechanism of Hsp70 molecular chaperones.
  • Write reports and/or papers on completed research in cooperation with professorial supervisor.
  • Critically read and edit papers by other laboratory personnel.
  • Maintain literature awareness of research area.
  • Present research results orally to professional groups.
  • Participate in group and divisional seminar in field(s) of study and in Department Colloquia.
  • Interact collegially with others in the laboratory, the department, and elsewhere at the University.
  • Provide leadership in the research group, particularly taking responsibility for the work related to nuclear magnetic resonance.
  • Interface with the core facility for nuclear magnetic resonance, including sharing expertise in new methods and providing advice on upgrades to the facility.
  • Collaborate with professorial supervisor in the preparation of research materials.
  • Maintain laboratory apparatus as applicable in the best possible order; look up catalog numbers and cost of needed research items.
  • Train junior personnel in basic laboratory methods.
  • Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean's strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, or closely related field, at time of hire.
  • Demonstrated skills in molecular biology, protein purification, and biophysical methods. Specific expertise in nuclear magnetic resonance is preferred.
  • Evidence of productivity, as demonstrated by publications and other professional activities.
  • Intellectual curiosity, a working knowledge, and certain expertise in the research area under consideration.
  • Manual dexterity and laboratory skills consistent with the research being performed.
  • Initiative and drive.
  • Ability to communicate and work efficiently with others.
  • Scientific creativity.
  • Ability to work with a minimal amount of supervision.
  • Physical Demands/Working Conditions

    Ability to work in a lab environment.

    Work Schedule

    40 hours per week, 100% FTE.

    Salary Information

    Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be consistent with the UMass Amherst postdoctoral bargaining unit contract.
