Description

Current and future autonomous systems, learning systems, robots, and various other intelligent (AI) systems in areas such as transportation, aviation, and healthcare require the interaction of machine learning with estimation and control theory, physics, and distributed computing. The Sensor Informatics and Medical Technology research group works in this intersection of the disciplines to produce significant research results both in fundamental and applied level. The group carries out original high-quality research and continuously publishes in top journals and conferences of the field. We have an extensive international collaboration network, which will facilitate the mobility of our researchers to leading research groups abroad, and vice versa. Our group is located at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland. We are also affiliated with the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI, https: // fcai.fi/).

We are looking for highly motivated candidates who are excited about distributed estimation and control, physics-driven machine learning or quantum computing, and who can contribute to developing various kinds of AI-assisted framework and tools. Potential projects include but are not limited to:

  • development of fast distributed and parallel computing methods for state estimation, control, and machine learning. Applications include tracking systems, model predictive control, and health technology.

  • physics-driven machine learning which combines physical models (e.g. differential equations) with neural network and Gaussian process models. Applications include meteorological forecasting, industrial processes, and various AI systems.

  • development of quantum machine learning algorithms (e.g. quantum Gaussian processes) in collaboration with VTT's quantum computing experts who are developing quantum computer hardware.

  • Requirements:

  • at least PhD or equivalent in mathematics, computer science, control, physics, electrical engineering, statistics, or related field

  • knowledge in statistical inference, state estimation, machine learning, control theory, quantum computing, or physics

  • proficiency in programming languages used in scientific computing, such as, Python, Matlab, or Julia

  • excellent English skills (written and oral)

  • strong publication record is considered as a plus

  • The expected starting salary for a postdoctoral researcher is approximately 3700 € per month. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus which can be easily reached by public transport.
