In the last decade, the University Bern, under the guidance of the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP), has extensively invested in ultrafast science and technology, becoming one of the major centres for ultrafast science and spectroscopy of Switzerland, with several groups active in the field and the creation of an advanced centre and competence hub in ultrafast spectroscopy (FASTLab). This recently established facility can provide a variety of spectroscopic technique, from THz to deep-UV, to external users looking for advanced non-linear or time-resolved spectroscopic techniques and a qualified assistance. In the continuous effort to improve this offer and keep it on the edge of the state of the art, it was decided to develop and implement femtosecond vibrational spectroscopies (FVS) of photoexcited systems in solid and liquid phase. These methodologies will be immediately used in several research activities spanning from nanomaterials, (supra-)molecular (opto-)devices, highly correlated materials, functional molecular system.

We are offering a fully funded position as a post-doctoral fellow (PostDoc) under the supervision of Prof. Cannizzo at the Institute of Applied Physics of the University of Bern (Switzerland) to implement two complementary FVS techniques: the impulsive vibrational spectroscopy (IVS) and the emtosecond stimulated (resonant) Raman spectroscopy (FSRS). The former is more suitable for low and middle frequency modes (<1200 cm-1), the latter for middle and high frequency vibrational modes (>500 cm-1). (a detailed description of a IVS and a FSRS set-up can be found elsewhere1) to be applied to the study of molecule devices and quantum (nano-)materials. This is a challenging and stimulating task where different techniques (generation of ultra-broadband pulses, pulse compression and shaping, phase-stable detection schemes, Fourier transform spectroscopy) must be mastered and synergistically coupled. As a chosen candidate, your main goal will be to develop and implement these methodologies and to apply them to study of different phenomena in different molecular systems.


We are seeking for a motivated junior researcher with a strong background in femtosecond spectroscopy, and with proved experience in building table-top optical set-ups. You should have an active attitude, an accurate way of working, and excellent communicative and collaborative skills.

We offer

The appointment is available from the 1st of January 2023. The salary is based on the salary scale of the Swiss National Science Foundation (indicatively 90'000 CHF/year). The employment rate is 100 % for 2 years, plus 1 optional year depending on budget.
