The Opportunity

Colorado School of Mines is searching for a post-doctoral researcher to work principally with Professor Greg Jackson's group on funded research projects related to concentrating solar power and high-temperature thermal and thermochemical storage. Primary responsibilities will be helping to oversee efforts in collaboration with national labs and industrial partners to run experiments and develop multi-physics modeling tools to analyze and scale-up new approaches to heat transfer in and out of inert and reacting particles in unique fluidizing beds relevant for various high-temperature energy storage modes (thermal, chemical, and thermochemical). The researcher will also play a vital role in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students working in the lab. Opportunities to participate on other funded projects related to high- temperature electrochemical processes will be considered based on the candidates' expertise.

This is a full-time, 2-year appointment (anticipated 1/22/2022-12/31/2023) with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Developing and overseeing experimental test facilities for high- temperature fluidized bed heat transfer relevant for concentrating solar applications
  • Supporting multi-physics model development for analyzing particle heat transfer in fluidized bed heat exchangers and reactors and scaling up designs.
  • Mentoring students working on collaborative projects with respect to experiments and modeling studies
  • Interaction with industry and government partners on heat exchanger and reactor design analysis and scale-up.
  • Play critical role in writing up research for government reports and archival journals and presenting results at national and international conferences.
  • ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supporting research projects related to high-temperature electrolysis for energy conversion and storage.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in mechanical or chemical engineering or related field with an emphasis on thermal, fluids and energy sciences completed by 01/2022
  • Certifications and Licenses:

  • None required
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experimental skills working with data acquisition and measurements involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and/or chemical reactions
  • Experience with multi-dimensional modeling of thermal fluid systems
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of LabView programming or similar data acquisition environment
  • Some background in concentrating solar power applications
  • Some experience with SolidWorks or other computer aided design tools
  • Laboratory safety training

    Pay Range

    Mines is offering an academic year salary of $58,000 - $63,000
