29, rue Henri Koch, Esch-sur-Alzette L-4354, Luxembourg
21/08/2023 17:54:54Background Tick-borne diseases are a serious public health issue and will likely become even more relevant with tick species moving into new habitats as a consequence of climate change and new pathogens being introduced and getting established. Tick-borne pathogen surveillance is thus an important component of preparedness for new and emerging threats. While traditionally many tick surveillance activities were focussing on more rural areas, there is growing attention to the risk in urban settings such as public parks and city- associated recreational areas.
Objectives We seek a highly motivated early stage post-doctoral fellow with experience in tick-borne pathogens research, who will collect ticks at various locations within Luxembourg, investigate them in the laboratory and characterize the pathogens and microorganisms they harbour. The candidate is expected to set up and apply detection protocols for tick-borne pathogens and to characterize these pathogens by sequencing, but also to develop together with the group leader a grant proposal to acquire additional funding for the research. Cooperation with local authorities and stakeholders will be required.
Training and research environment. The candidate will be integrated in the Clinical and Applied Virology Group within the Department of Infection and Immunity and will be supervised by Dr Judith Hübschen. The candidate will work together with other researchers focusing on applied infectious disease research with the aim to provide scientific evidence for public and animal health decision makers. Dr Hübschen is also a partner in the PRAGMATICK COST action (https: // pragmatick- action.eu/).
KEY SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONSThe candidate will have the opportunity to work in an interactive and international scientific environment. Research staff is supported by easy access to scientific expertise, well-equipped facilities and an active seminar program. Various training opportunities including research, communication, project management and other skills are offered by LIH.
