Post Doctoral Associate (Hocky Group) New York University: NYU - NY: Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS):

Chemistry Department

New York

Open Date

Dec 19, 2019

The Hocky research group is seeking motivated individuals who wish to perform postdoctoral associate research in theoretical and computational chemistry and biophysics. Possible research topics involve studying the effect of force in biophysical contexts using molecular simulations, and studying non-equilibrium effects in materials science. The type of project ranges from computational methods development to projects directly interfacing with experimental collaborators.

As this is a new research group, Postdoc Associates would be expected to participate multiple projects as well as to help supervise graduate students who are early in their research careers. They would also be expected to help seek external funding for their own work, as well as to participate in writing of proposals for federal grants and computational resources. Postdocs in the Hocky group will receive close one-on-one mentoring, opportunities to present results at conferences, and guidance and support transitioning to their next career stage.

NYU provides a stimulating and vibrant environment for those interested in theoretical chemistry and biophysics. The Hocky research group is housed in a newly renovated theory suite in the Chemistry department, along with four other theory groups. The Chemistry department is located in the heart of Manhattan, next to Washington Square Park. We are adjacent to the Center for Soft Matter Research (one of the top places for soft matter and active matter research in the world), and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (one of the top Applied Math departments in the world, featuring many experts in relevant computational methods). There are also four other theory faculty in the Chemistry departments at NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai. NYU currently has a large shared computational cluster, with plans for a major expansion in the near future.

Successful applicants will have experience in molecular modeling and simulation and must hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Biophysics, or a related field and a firm knowledge of equilibrium statistical mechanics. A candidate should have experience programming in python, bash scripting, use of various sized computing resources, and skills running common Molecular Dynamics packages such as Gromacs, Amber, LAMMPS or similar. The ideal candidate would also have experience and interest in enhanced sampling simulation techniques such as Umbrella Sampling, Metadynamics, the String Method, Thermodynamic Integration, etc.

The terms of employment which would be a year, with a possibility of renewal, include a competitive salary and other benefits (including the possibility of reasonably priced housing owned by NYU). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and candidates will be considered until the position is filled.

Application Instructions

To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter summarizing research experience and specifying the interests in this position; a curriculum vitae (including a full list of publications); a statement of research interests; and two letters of reference.
