Position Summary
The laboratory of Philip Spanheimer, MD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is inviting applications for two funded positions to begin as early as April 2021. The Spanheimer lab studies mechanisms of transcriptional regulation associated with patterns of gene expression related to key phenotypic traits. Particular areas of emphasis are investigating how the program of estrogen response is maintained in estrogen receptor positive breast cancer and identifying novel therapeutic vulnerabilities in tumors that become unresponsive to antiestrogen treatment (Spanheimer et al. Clin Cancer Research 2014, Spanheimer et al. Ann Surg 2014, Spanheimer et al. Ann Surg Oncol 2015). We work with cell line and in vitro models, but as a surgeon we also have direct use of fresh human tumor specimens. We are developing novel experimental approaches with fresh cancer specimens using single cell sequencing. We use techniques such as chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing, affinity purification mass spectroscopy, and genetic manipulations with siRNA to study effects of transcription factors on gene expression and transcription factor interactions. We work very closely and are physically next to the Chuck Perou lab.
