Offer Description

POST-DOC POSITION

Ultrabroadband Photothermal Microscope for grading and staging of tumor biopsies

Context: Within the European Pathfinder project TROPHY - ultrafast hOlograPHic FTIR microscopy - we are looking for an aspiring scientist to fill a PostDoc position at Politecnico di Milano, working on a cutting-edge project that promises to push the boundaries of vibrational microscopy.

Project overview: Photo-thermal microscopy is a rapidly emerging technique for the imaging of biological samples with high selectivity, sensitivity and spatial resolution. It relies on the photo-thermal effect, which occurs when a visible probe beam reads out the local temperature change induced by a second laser beam in the mid-infrared absorbed by the sample. The research program aims at developing a novel photo-thermal microscope based on a compact Ytterbium femtosecond oscillator capable of providing images with high chemical specification and at video speed of biological samples and in particular of tumor biopsies.

Activity:

  • Synthesize ultrabroadband pulses in the mid-infrared for sample excitation and narrow band pulses in the visible for extracting the photo-thermal signal.
  • Design a set of optics and of galvanometric mirrors for the simultaneous scanning of infrared and visible pulses over sample areas up to 1 square millimeter.
  • Characterize the photo-thermal response of several samples as a function of incident intensity, scanning speed, delay between pump and probe pulses, focusing conditions.
  • Implement a Fourier transform interferometer for extracting the spectral content of the photothermal signal.
  • Acquire hyper-spectral images of biopsies to be compared against images from competing or complementary approaches and to be classified via AI tools.
  • Employment Conditions:

  • A net salary: 2 355.25 € per month, paid 12 times per year.
  • English as the main working language.
  • Freedom to focus entirely on your research, with no mandatory teaching duties.
  • A lab located in Lecco, on the Como lake, in a newly developed campus.
  • Within our research team, our achievements rest upon collaboration and transparent communication and on a setting where regular dialogues are welcomed and all concepts receive attention. Teamwork is of utmost importance to us; we uphold the principle of supporting one another and working together towards our common research objectives. As the lead investigator, I provide guidance to ensure that every member of our team receives the necessary support and mentorship.
