Post-Doc, M/F: Geology: Sedimentology And Geothermy (Bourgogne)

Universities and Institutes of France

May 19, 2022

  • Organisation/Company: CNRS
  • Research Field: Astronomy Environmental science Geosciences
  • Researcher Profile: First Stage Researcher (R1)
  • Application Deadline: 19/05/2022 23:59 - Europe/Brussels
  • Location: France › DIJON
  • Type Of Contract: Temporary
  • Job Status: Full-time
  • Hours Per Week: 35
  • Offer Starting Date: 01/09/2022
  • --The objective of this project is to work on the problems of geothermal energy, based on the mobilization of heat contained in the subsoil at very low, low or high temperature, a field that is part of the success of the energy transition, on the scale of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region and neighboring departments. The candidate will be asked to implement innovative methodological approaches integrating various geological, geophysical, physico-chemical, or petrophysical data, in order to characterize the reservoirs. This approach will be based on the development and application of analytical methods, at different scales of observation (from microstructure to basin-scale), and/or modeling (numerical or analogical). Knowledge of sedimentology and petrography of terrigenous deposits would complete this profile, with the objective of estimating the potential geothermal role of the subsurface sedimentary series of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region and neighboring departments (notably from the end-Paleozoic to the Triassic). In practice, the candidate will have to characterize the reservoir qualities by analyzing (1) the petrophysical nature of the rocks, (2) their geometries, and (3) the transformations subsequent to their emplacement (diagenesis of sedimentary systems). Finally, this project will analyze the risks that thermal breakthroughs entail on the hydrodynamic functioning of sandy- sandstones reservoirs, which is essential for such an exploitation of potential aquifers.

It is specified that this recruitment takes place within the framework of the plan "France Relance", on a research collaboration project with a company which will be submitted to the DRARI for validation. Within the framework of this post-doctorate contract of 24 months, the candidate will have to apply his/her competences in the field of sedimentology and more generally in the Geosciences of the Environment and Paleoenvironments. He/she will have to demonstrate a strong knowledge on the formation of terrigenous depositional sedimentary systems, petrophysical properties of rocks, fluid/rock interactions, and to master the analytical tools of petrography, X-ray diffraction/fluorescence, GIS methods and the use of DTM, and well-log interpretation. This project focuses on the understanding of geothermal systems in Burgundy and in neighboring departments, and on the analysis of the sedimentary and diagenetic processes behind the stratigraphic producing levels (end-Paleozoic/Triassic sedimentary successions).

The candidate will work in a team of sedimentologists and geochemists in the academic framework (Université de Bourgogne, 40% of his/her activity), but will have to develop a large part of his/her professional activity within INGEN company (Innovations for Geosciences) (60% of his/her activity) under the supervision of Franck Smektala (geology engineer) and his associates. Experience in the field of geophysics and mineralogical characterization of rocks would be desirable (petrophysical properties of rocks; technical skills in physical and chemical properties of rocks; or practical experience in the use of analytical tools such as XRD, XRF, SEM, etc...).

    Eligibility criteria

The candidate must have a robust laboratory and field experience; basic knowledge of geology (mineralogy, stratigraphy, sedimentology, geochemistry) is required. Some experience in geophysics (well-logs and seismic interpretations) are an asset.
