Offer Description

The post-doc will be working in the framework of a collaboration between two companies and LTDS lab at ECL on a project to develop materials for friction stir welding (FSW) tools, enabling friction stir welding of high mechanical performance materials, with improved tool lifetime.

Within the framework of this project, LTDS's objective is to understand the tribological damage phenomena of FSW tools on the basis of laboratory tribological tests and numerical simulation results, working on the materials currently in use and on those developed in another work package of the project (using the SPS - spark plasma sintering - process), so as to optimize the tribological behavior of these new materials for FSW applications.

The post-doc's work is part of the "Analysis and understanding of tribological damage to FSW tools" work package, studying the tribological behavior of new materials under conditions representative of the FSW of materials with high mechanical properties, combined with the contributions of numerical simulation of this assembly process.

In collaboration with the project partners and the tribology researchers and engineers at LTDS (Ecully and Saint-Etienne campuses), you will hold the position of post-doc in tribology and will be responsible for the following tasks:

- Implement a tribological experimental approach and validate it with tests on currently used materials

- Carry out laboratory tribological tests on newly developed materials

- Analyze the obtained tribological results and supplement them with analyses carried out on worn surfaces, to gain an understanding of wear phenomena, in relationships with the effects of experimental parameters, to move towards a better understanding of material effects.

- Participate in the development of an improved numerical simulation code for the FSW process, based on the obtained experimental data, and use the results of the code to gain a deeper understanding of the experimental test results.

- Coordinate project planning (experiments, analyses, calculations, reports, etc.)

- Maintain the acquired knowledge by ensuring formalization via reports and presentations

- Communicate results

This project is funded under the RAPID scheme of the Defense Innovation Agency (French Ministry of Defense).
