  • Scientific context : The climate of planet Mars resemble the one of a small, cold and arid Earth. The system is nevertheless complex, because of the formation of dust storms, the condensation of the atmospheric CO2, and a water cycle very different than on the Earth. At present, water ice in unstable on the surface outside the polar regions, and liquid water is never present on the surface. Yet, geological observations show that it has not always been like that. Throughout its recent history, Mars has been through 'ice ages' during which some regions were covered by active glaciers. The mid latitudes even got covered by a mantle of water ice a few thousands of years ago. These climate variations appear to have been recorded in details in the layers of the kilometers-thick polar layered deposits, which are now very well known thanks to radar sounding from orbit. What was Mars like thousands or millions of years ago? How did Mars evolved? It seems clear that the climate variations resulted from the large oscillations of Mars' obliquity and of orbit. Yet, in spite of all the data, the climatic processes that have shaped Mars' surface through time remain largely unknown.

    The Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD, IPSL, Paris, France) is looking for a post-doc to model Mars glaciers and past climate (in the framework of the ERC project “Mars Through Time”)

    The Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique is specialised in the study of the Earth atmosphere (Observations and numerical modelling). The Planetology LMD team also studies the environment on other worlds (Mars, Venus, Giant Planets, Titan, Pluto, Exoplanets). Within this group, the “Mars Through Time” project gathers PhD students, numerical engineers and post-docs working together on the modeling of the past environment of planet Mars. External collaboration, notably with geologists, will be set up.

    Eligibility criteria

    The candidate should hold a PhD in climate or planetary sciences, ideally with an expertise in numerical modeling .
