Centre of Scientific Excellence - Solar and Stellar Activity operating within the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Wrocław is looking for a candidate for a post-doc (assistant professor) position. The successful candidate will be employed for two-year period, with the possibility of extension, and will conduct research on solar physics, particularly related to the modelling and simulations of the quiet and active atmosphere of the Sun and stars. This project aims to develop a research group conducting modern scientific research concerning magnetic activity of the Sun and stars, and related space weather. The team consists of experienced and young scientists whose activity focuses on the analysis of observations and the modelling of solar and stellar active phenomena, and on the use of advanced computational methods and existing numerical codes to interpret observations and construct models of these phenomena at various spatial and temporal scales. The data used are obtained with both ground-based and space instruments. Numerical codes enable to construct static and time-dependent models of active solar and stellar structures using radiative transfer under NLTE conditions in 1D and multidimensional structures.

The candidate is required to have:

PhD degree in solar physics, astrophysics, space physics, theoretical physics or in a closely related field obtained not earlier than in 2014.

Scientific achievements in the field of solar physics or astrophysics, with preferred focus on solar and/or stellar atmospheres, documented by peer-reviewed publications.

Experience with programming languages, namely Fortran and IDL (or Python), and issues related to the numerical modelling and simulations. Good ability to learn new programming languages and developing computing codes.

Knowledge of methods and computational approaches enabling the construction of static and dynamic NLTE and RHD models of the solar and/or stellar atmospheres. A knowledge of atomic physics and atomic spectroscopy is also expected.

Ability to combine advanced numerical modelling of the radiation transport with analysis of spectral observations of the solar and stellar activity from EUV to IR.

High research activity and participation in research projects, including international ones.

Fluency in spoken and written English.

Publications in international scientific journals within the discipline of astronomy and astrophysics. Interest in other cool stars is welcomed.

Responsibilities:

Conducting research within the "Centre of Scientific Excellence – Solar and Stellar Activity".

Scientific work in the field of solar physics, particularly in the area of ​​numerical modelling of active phenomena on the Sun and other cool stars, using available or newly developed numerical codes. The modelling results should be compared with observational data from ground and space. Development of spectral inversion techniques applicable to the new high time and spatial resolution obtained with ground-based and space observatories.

Participation in scientific meetings, seminars, preparation of scientific publications, active participation in international scientific conferences, collaborative visits.

Participation in the preparation of grant applications.

Strong international collaboration with institutes and scientific organizations in the area of ​​issues related to the subject of the Centre of Excellence.
