To serve and protect members of the University community and visitors by providing a safe and secure environment. Cultivate relationships and develop rapport with the University community to foster mutual trust, understanding and respect of individual rights and responsibilities. Requires highest level of leadership, community and customer oriented focus in order to provide high quality, effective public safety services. Implement community policing initiatives as defined by the Chief of Police and/or designee. Protect life and property within the University; enforce Federal, State and local laws and University policies; perform crime prevention, solution of crimes, apprehension of offenders; and maintain open communications with faculty, staff, students and area law enforcement agencies. Develop, build and maintain collaborative, problem-solving strategies and initiatives to create a climate of mutual respect and maintain a safe, secure environment for curricular and co-curricular learning educators. Promote positive relationships with the campus community. Actively engage in learning and practicing principles of social justice and inclusion, environmental sustainability and delivering great customer experience. Report to the Deputy Chief.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Associate's degree and one to two years' related experience required. Certification by Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council within probationary period required. Physical examination, written examination, psychological evaluation, and background investigation required pursuant to Rule 32 of Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council. Valid driver's license or ability to obtain, and driver's check required.
Ability to communicate effectively with people; physically restrain a suspect; run up/down several flights of stairs and up to 100 yards; stand for long periods of time; walk for several hours while on patrol; drive emergency response vehicle. Ability to hear radio and telephone communications at both high and low decibels. Radio and telephone communications require clear diction without impediments. Good vision needed.
