Physics Research Laboratories Technician (Cryogenic specialism) Support Staff

Location: Highfield Campus Salary: £25,217 to £30,046 Full Time Permanent Closing Date: Monday 02 August 2021 Interview Date: To be confirmed Reference: 1439621WF

Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southampton are looking to recruit an enthusiastic research laboratories technician to support our 29 state of the art research laboratories. you will be working alongside a large skilled team of technical staff, students (undergraduate and PhD), researchers and academics.

The research carried out in Physics at Southampton is varied, our labs include work on optical systems, ultra-high vacuum, x-rays, lasers, high-pressure gasses, cryogenics and more besides. Our technicians have a varied role too, in just one of the functions of this particular opportunity you will be asked to operate, maintain and (importantly for us) continuously improve the Helium liquefaction service for the University. This system enables us to conduct experiments at extremely low temperatures (-269ºC). If you have a really good base to build upon within the technical support of a science or engineering discipline then we will help you to gain the skills and understanding to become a vital part of our University and important scientific research.

You will take a lead role in the planned maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment, these activities may also include liaison and coordination with external suppliers and contractors. Duties also include some administration e.g. monitoring and logging, together with health and safety obligations as required.

Whilst experience of working in a Higher Education or research environment is desirable, it is imperative that you have a passion to acquire knowledge and skills combined with a desire to pass these on to others.

We have a track record of training and developing individuals with a broad technical background and little or no specific knowledge of physics laboratories to be able to contribute independently to research projects and support others to do the same. Perhaps you have experience of gas systems or compressed air systems, perhaps just a background in general mechanical engineering, perhaps you have always wanted to work in a high tech science environment? Whatever your experience or interest please do look through the job description to see if this role sparks your enthusiasm!

Whilst the post will enjoy substantial support from management and technical colleagues, you will be able to direct your own work and make your own decisions within reason and in line with the policy to accepted standards. This post requires a motivated and enthusiastic candidate with a passion for science and engineering who can work as an individual or as part of a team.

You should have a skill level equivalent to the achievement of L4/5 of the Regulated Qualifications framework What qualification levels mean: England, Wales and Northern Ireland - GOV.UK (www. gov.uk) e.g. HNC or above, but it is important to have work experience in a relevant technical field.

We are signatories of the Technician Commitment and have pledged to support technicians in key areas: www. southampton.ac.uk/about/our-people/technical- staff.page
