Injury (iDILI): defining contribution and mechanisms in monocyte-derived hepatocyte-like (MH) cells from iDILI patients for safer drug development

Applications are invited for a 4 year PhD studentship funded by the MRC Integrative Toxicology Training Partnership (ITTP). The studentship will be jointly supervised by Prof. MacFarlane at the MRC Toxicology Unit and Dr Williams at AstraZeneca, located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and Dr. Chadwick at the University of Liverpool.

Project

In drug development, Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a serious ADR, and a common driver of drug attrition in phase I-III trials across therapeutic areas (Weaver et al. 2021). Idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (iDILI) is one of the most challenging diagnosis in clinic & drug development. In this project, we will build on our initial evaluation in collaboration with AstraZeneca of idiosyncratic DILI patient-derived MetaHep cells as a pre-clinical model to enable better understanding of the role of mitochondrial toxicity in iDILI.

The project will provide the student with training in a wide range of wet lab techniques and a unique opportunity to integrate experimental laboratory skills with medicines drug safety.

Candidate

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual capable of thinking and working independently. Applicants should have or shortly expect to obtain a first or good upper second-class degree from a UK university, or an equivalent standard from an overseas university, in a relevant subject.

Funding

Full funding covering Maintenance and the University Composition Fee (Home Fee rate) is provided for this studentship, with effect from 1 October 2023. The Maintenance fee is currently £19,250.

This studentship is open to UK citizens or overseas students who meet the UK residency requirements (home fees) or are able to augment the funds to cover the extra costs associated with international student fees.
