Subjects Applied Analysis Description The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes are members of the Leibniz Association.
WIAS invites applications for a PhD student position (f/m/d) (Ref. 22/28) in the Research Group “Partial Differential Equations” (Head: Prof. Dr. A. Mielke) starting not earlier than 1. September 2022.
This predoc-position is offered in project B09 of CRC 1114. The goal of this project is the modeling and mathematical analysis of the onset and propagation of delamination and fracture, which form evolving discontinuities in solids on multiple scales. Inspired by geological observations we shall consider hierarchies of fracture networks ranging from large scales down to micro- scales. Using variational approaches and analytical tools for nonlinear, nonsmooth partial differential equations and homogenization theory, the aim is to deduce effective limit models as well as good approximative models reducing the geometric complexity.
Applicants are expected to hold a university degree (Master or Diploma) in Mathematics. The successful candidate will have profound knowledge in at least one of the areas: functional analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, calculus of variations, numerical analysis for partial differential equations (FEM, FVM). Willingness to interdisciplinary collaborations is mandatory. Moreover, knowledge in stochastics (i.e. ergodic theory), semigroup theory, and mathematical modeling in continuum mechanics is useful.
Please direct scientific queries to Dr. Martin Heida (Martin.Heida@wias- berlin.de) or Dr. Marita Thomas (Marita.Thomas@wias-berlin.de).
This is a joint position with Freie Universität Berlin, first limited to two years at WIAS with the possibility of an extension till 30.6.2026 at Freie Universität Berlin. It is paid according to TVöD Bund, resp. TVöD Land. The reduced working hours at WIAS are 29.25 hours per week.
The Weierstrass Institute is an equal opportunity employer. We explicitly encourage female researchers to apply for the offered position. Among equally qualified applicants, disabled candidates will be given preference.
Please upload complete application documents including a cover letter, curriculum vitae and photocopies of relevant certificates as soon as possible and no later than 14.08.2022 via our online job-application facility (https: // wias-berlin.softgarden.io/de/vacancies) using the button “Apply online” (https: // short.sg/a/20344153).
