The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We are building with an interdisciplinary team a modular robotics platform for autonomous materials discovery. Our aim is to develop modules for different sample preparation and characterization tasks orchestrated in an automated platform that will be run by a machine learning based design of experiments.

Your responsibilities include:

The overarching goal of this project is the machine learning (ML)-driven optimization of corrosion inhibitor cocktails tailored for different technical alloys. Specific tasks include:

  • Extension of our platform with an electrochemical test station
  • Automation of electrochemical data evaluation and definition/extraction of performance descriptors from electrochemical data
  • Development of the ML module for autonomous experiment planning
  • Execution of autonomous test campaigns and identification of promising candidates
  • Investigate the mechanisms of corrosion protection using advanced in situ and ex situ characterization techniques
  • Presentation of results at conferences and publication of results in peer- reviewed journals
  • Your qualifications:
  • Successfully completed university degree (master's/diploma) in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field (preferably with a thesis that demonstrates your competencies in the following technical points)
  • Proficiency in Python (incl. PyQt, Python SDKs)
  • Experience in corrosion and related surface analysis methods
  • Experience in working with collaborative software projects, preferably GitHub/GitLab
  • Familiarity with machine learning will be advantageous
  • Hands-on experience in electrochemistry will be advantageous
  • Excellent command in English, written and spoken
  • Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary and challenging project for advancing automation in material development and characterization
  • Good communication and Information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, willingness and ability to make decisions, ability to work in a Team/willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn
