The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

Work in a research project on the effect of sulfide and oxygen on the formation and stability of protective surface layers on steel reinforcement in concretes with sulfide-containing pore solution in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University:

  • Design and production of sulfide-containing binders based on Portland cement, ground granulated blast furnace slag and hard coal ash
  • Microstructural analyses of the hardened binder pastes and comparison with the results of thermodynamic-geochemical modelling of the phase assemblages
  • Electrochemical analyses of the passivation and corrosion initiation of steel in sulfide-containing solutions, with and without the presence of chlorides and/or oxygen, in electrochemical cells
  • Characterization of the steel surfaces using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS)
  • Development of a model of the passivation and corrosion initiation of steel reinforcement in concretes with sulfide-containing pore solution and, based on this, re-evaluation of traditional criteria for the assessment of the corrosion risk of steel reinforcement in concrete
  • Documentation and publication of the results
  • Your qualifications:
  • Successful scientific degree (Master / Diploma) in materials science, chemistry, applied geosciences, mineralogy, building materials engineering, or equivalent academic studies
  • Theoretical knowledge of metal corrosion and practical experience with standard electrochemical techniques for the analysis of corrosion phenomena (e.g., linear polarization method, galvanostatic pulse measurements)
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of X-ray powder diffraction, thermal analyses (TG/DSC), pore structure analysis, thermodynamic modelling software, SEM and/or ToF-SIMS are advantageous
  • Very good command of English (written and spoken); good command of German (written and spoken) is advantageous
  • Good publication and presentation skills
  • Goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative / commitment, ability to work in a Team / willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn, flexibility
