The Institute of Public Finance invites applications for the position of a PhD Student (m/f/d) in taxation and public finance (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 75 %) starting September 1, 2022 or later. The position is initially limited to two years, with the possibility of extension.


Responsibilities include research and teaching in the field of public finance as well as participation in highly relevant empirical studies on the taxation of individuals and companies. The research work offers the opportunity to prepare for a doctorate.

Employment requirements

Candidates must hold a scientific university degree (Diploma/Master) in either business administration or economics or be about to finish their studies in these areas within a year. Advanced knowledge in applying empirical methods in economics or business administration is expected. Applicants should have a strong interest in empirical research with a focus on taxation. Outstanding social, personal, and communication skills are expected.

What we offer

The Institute of Public Finance at Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) conducts research in public finance with a particular focus on empirical research in taxation. We study a broad variety of questions that are relevant for society, policy makers and businesses. The institute is integrated into the Faculty of Economics and Management at LUH, which offers a vibrant research environment for researchers, including funding for research stays abroad which are explicitly supported by the institute.

In September 2022, Maximilian Todtenhaupt (currently Norwegian School of Economics) will join LUH as a professor and take over the leadership of the Institute of Public Finance.
